We're going after the warmongers' greatest strength, which is their claim that peace will bring genocide. This assertion is keeping the US in Iraq - exceeding the wmds and Al Qaeda (which were the first big lies and not there until we invaded).

Their argument?

Sadam's iron fist was largely secular and intolerant of ethnic cleansing, so without such an authority, who will stop the slaughter? And the news today from Iraq is that "progress" is being made and so now is not the time to end the "surge". No one with a heart can fail to ask themselves if - having broken it - we have a right now to leave Iraq before that threat is ended.

But what's the truth?

According to a July 30 report from Oxfam and a coalition of Iraqi NGOs, 8 million Iraqis - nearly a third of the population - are in need of immediate food and shelter, an humanitarian crisis that has escalated sharply since the US invasion. The report found more than 4 million internal and external refugees, nearly 30% of children malnourished, 70% of Iraqis without adequate water, 80% without effective sanitation. And according to a recent independent survey, 1.22 million Iraqis have died so far because of this conflict.

Clearly, there is a real and present genocide against the Iraqi people, but this genocide is caused by war.

What are the President and Congress doing about it? The US is now providing less than 15% of the humanitarian aid it gave in 2003, less now than either Norway or the Netherlands - less than $50 million this year, about $2 for each Iraqi citizen, which is less than 1/10,000 of our total war spending. As for the effectiveness of this pittance: the US agency overseeing reconstruction in Iraq reports that economic mismanagement and corruption are equivalent to "a second insurgency".

Clearly, the US has been unwilling or unable to act to protect the Iraqi people, so it stands against reason to suppose that the Iraqis would be endangered by our exit.

Meanwhile, President Bush claims that reduced war casualties amounts to "progress", when in fact there have been higher casualties every month through August of this year than in the same months last year, and casualties are only now beginning to fall because the genocide nears completion; and Bush claims that genocide resulted from our leaving Viet Namn, when in fact there was no genocide in Viet Namn after we left - the genocide was in Cambodia, where carpet bombing of civilians gave rise to the Khmer Rouge, not our withdrawal.

In the words of M.L. King, we must overcome "the great stumbling block" of the moderate who "paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom". To do this we must unveil the Biggest Lie. Peace does not equal genocide.

Don't be scared of peace.
